Ever wonder why couples choose to elope? Well, our good friends Mike and Anna did just that, so we asked them to write up a little story about their epic elopement in Colorado! Enjoy!
"We got engaged in April of 2015 and had already discussed the plan to elope in the beautiful mountains of Colorado and go right in to our honeymoon. After some research, we learned that we could self solemnize our marriage in Colorado and not have to bring in an officiant to marry us. We were all about having a simplified elopement so not having to hire someone specifically to marry us was ideal. We were able to take care of all of the legal parts at the courthouse, then the ceremony could be done in the mountains where we said our vows to one another. After getting engaged, we informed both of our families of our plans to elope. Overall, it went over pretty well and everyone was extremely supportive. The promise of an epic wedding video documenting our ceremony/experience for them all to watch later also helped our case.
Knowing that we wanted to keep our wedding anniversary the same as our dating anniversary, June 17th came quickly and we had a lot of work to do in only 2 months. In addition to our wedding plans, we needed help getting a great honeymoon together and this is where our best friend, and owner of this website, came to the rescue. Joe lent us his amazing travel hacking/planning advice and helped us make it all happen. We let him know our plans and that we were going to need flights to Denver, San Francisco and a return flight home. After providing Joe with all of the details, he helped us choose the credit card we needed for our trip and provided us with a clever method of getting our minimum spend on the card. After booking our outgoing flights, we had enough to book a few days worth of hotel stays with points and cash too. Joe was also able to hook us up with upgraded rooms at one of our hotels in San Francisco which was great added bonus. We mixed in a few AirBnbs in to our stays and booked our return flight through a budget airline. In the end, Joe helped us to realize our plans to honeymoon in Denver and San Francisco and not break the bank.
Once we had the honeymoon plans locked in, we needed to book our videographer. We knew EXACTLY who we wanted to tell our story - an amazing husband & wife duo named Kristine and Calen Rhome of White in Revery who, at the time, lived in Orlando and serendipitously were moving to Colorado just before we were wanting to elope. There weren’t any other backups, we knew that Kristine and Calen were the only ones we wanted. They are cinematic storytellers and their wedding videos are unlike anything we had ever seen. From the beginning, Anna said there were only two things she wanted on her wedding day: a pretty dress and White In Revery to film our mountain elopement. Since we weren’t going to be spending money on a venue, food or the usual wedding related expenses, we decided that we would pay for an amazing video to show our family.
Kristine and Calen ended up recommending a really talented photographer (and friend of theirs) named Julia, of Darling Juliet Photography. We weren’t even planning on hiring a photographer and just figured that a few cell phone photos would get us by, but now we are so thankful we hired Julia to capture our special day. She is such an amazing and creative photographer. Her photos really complemented the level of story telling that White in Revery does. Once we had them in place, we only needed to find the location where we would film our ceremony. This is where Kristine and Calen really went above and beyond their videographer duties when they went out exploring with us around Colorado until we stumbled upon Guanella Pass. We would have never come across this spot had we not used the restrooms at an outpost on our way up to Mt. Evans.
The top of Guanella Pass was breathtaking, literally and metaphorically. It was over 11,000 ft. above sea level but was INCREDIBLE. You could drive straight up to the top and see Mt. Evans in the distance. It was positioned in the middle of other huge mountains and it was an amazing sight. We knew immediately that this was where we wanted to get married. So two days later, we said our vows to one another on the mountain summit. There was a rock that jutted out over a hill as if God put it there specifically for couples to get married on. In place of a traditional reception, our videographers had the great of idea of pulling off into a campground to build a fire and make some s’mores as the sun went down. It was absolutely perfect and we will never forget the best day of our lives."
